“Destroy” onomatopoeia 3D lettering

“Destroy” is about a 3D sculptural onomatopoeia lettering.

What is an onomatopoeia?

It is a linguistic imitation or visual representation of a sound. The word suggest visually what it means. They can usually be found in comics. Example: The word “Explosion” could be graphically represented by an exploding text.

Used material and handling

I used a 3cm thick polystyrene surface. This material was chosen for this work because it can be handled very easy. In addition, it can be destroyed in a very interesting way.

Polystyrene

3D lettering work process

  1. 3D model mockup creation in Cinema 4D: “Helvetica LTD Std Black” was the used type for this lettering because of his roughness and thickness. These features were required in order to create the destruction effect.
  2. Template creation and printing
  3. Template cutting
  4. Drawing transfer to material
  5. Base cutting
  6. Sculpture visual composition
  7. Base destruction
  8. Letter handling and pasting
  9. Painting phase: My first idea was to use 2 colours, but due to the erosion effect that the paint spray applies to the polystyrene I changed my mind and decided to use only black colour.
