Creative urban intervention – Micropolitic action – The creative projection

The aim of this “Design sociology” subject project was the creation of a creative intervention in an urban environment.

In order to do this work, I took inspiration from the light projection with painted light bulbs. Nevertheless, I did not desire just a simple projection, so I decided to add a lettering to the scene. I wanted to play with color light projection and shadows.

The development of the creative urban intervention

This project has two basic parts: The light source and the shadow-projecting object, which is in this case a hand-cutted lettering.

The light source

The light source was finally a lamp to which I applied a paint brush design using lacquer bulbs. The chosen colours are red, green and blue, because they mean the RGB color light-based system.

In order to explain the aim of this intervention to the people, I added a label to the lamp with the following description:

We, the graphics designers, are the creative solution to the daily visual communication problems. We get creative ideas from where it seems to be nothing to find and everything is dark.

The lettering

On the other hand you can find the lettering that shows the sentence “Proyectamos creatividad donde solo existe oscuridad” (We project creativity where only darkness exists). The first step was the creation of the composition in Illustrator using the font “Selima” from Jroh Creative and the second step was the printing and the cutting.

The scene

It was necessary to do this intervention in a place with two near opposite walls and so I chose an underpass. In one wall I would fix the lamp, in the other you would be able to see the shadow projection and between them I would hang the lettering from the roof.

Audiovisual project

In addition to take several photos, Alberto Bravo Vera also helped me to shoot some short audiovisual scenes where the lamp was being moved and which created very interesting effects in the projection.

Conclusions

Through this work, I wanted as a graphic designer to communicate to the people the essence of my job, meaning the contribution of creative solutions (the light projection) where there are no creative ideas (the darkness).
