Moussel contest designs

Moussel de Legrain launched the “Reinvent Moussel” contest for music and design students from different spanish universities in February 2012 with the idea of creating a new 2012 limited edition. Taking part in this contest became the second part of the class work for of the “Prácticas II” subject.

The contest  had three different sections:

  1. To design of 3 labels for the 600 ml container.
  2. To create designs for a shower towel, a hand towel and a bathmat.
  3. Creation of a 20 seconds long Jingle (promotional video), whose adaptation would be reduced to 10 seconds.

For this class work we just had to create the design for the labels and the bathroom fittings.

About Moussel de Legrain

Moussel De Legrain (Unilever Spain PLC) is a brand that sells products for baths and was created by Henry Legrain, a French man from Paris. At the moment, it belongs to the American multinational Sara Lee, which produces and sells products. Sara Lee owns brands like Bimbo, Sanex, Ambi Pur, Marcilla, etc. Moussel gel transmits gentleness, it is foaming, etc.

The Moussel style

The brand basically approaches the vintage style, a style linked to the 50s, 60s and 70s. This style is used in all their product lines. The fact of beeing connected to these times is that their products remind us of those nostalgic moments of our childhood, like baths with a lot of foam we loved as children, but also of our youth. This is because they transmit a very special aroma that arouses our memories. Their products transmit mildness and elegance. The gel is composed by natural oils and it is very foaming and light. It is also very peculiar, because it seems to be an old product, but at the same time it seems to be a modern product. To identify itself, it limits itself by using a magenta colour range, combining them with white.

My proposals

Design 1 - Moussel contest designs

The first label is based on the composition that plays with tones associated with Pantone 221 C, white and other similar tones. This composition shows a bath scene with a young girl.

This design was created to remind us that Moussel can also be used when travelling. In the scene a girl who is taking a bath appears surrounded by foam and at the background you can see some plane or ship windows, suggesting travelling. To reinforce the idea of travelling inside the composition, I have placed a travel bag hanging from the curtain.

The girl rubs the container and simulates a magic lamp that makes bubbles.

The graphic composition tries to transmit a youth and childhood sensation at the same time. The girl appears with closed eyes, remembering her happy childhood.

All elements and colours have been selected by basing myself on Moussel products. I used a model for the creation of the illustration.

Design 2 - Moussel contest designs

The second label includes a boy because a girl appeared in the previous one and the target also includes male public. In this case, I used myself as a model. In the composition it simulates a shower scene because the bath scene has already been used in the previous label.

Design 3 - Moussel contest designs

My last proposal, the third label, is a combination of the two previous designs. It makes possible see both illustrations in the same container. The idea was to split the scene in two bathrooms. To do this I put a splitting element in the middle. It also has a slight similarity with a comic cartoon. Although both illustrations are separated, I wanted both to merge together, overlapping elements of one illustration over the other.

Application on Moussel products

I also did another experiment, testing the appereance of the labels applied to other containers.

Towels and bath mat

Towels - Moussel contest designs

For the graphic composition of the different bathroom fittings I used elements from the label designs to create a connection between both.

-> “Toalla de ducha” (Spanish) = Shower towel
-> “Toalla de lavabo” (Spanish) = Hand towel
-> “Alfombrilla” (Spanish) = Bath mat
